At ALine, every project begins with listening. We believe the most meaningful spaces are created through collaboration, which is why our process starts with a resident survey. This allows us to understand how residents experience their lobbies and hallways today and how they want to feel in them tomorrow. From functional and emotional needs to color, texture, style, and atmosphere, these conversations and insights shape every decision we make throughout the design development process.

Over time, we began to notice a clear trend. An analysis of our most recent projects revealed that 80% favored monochromatic palettes, while 60% leaned toward cooler tones. While these spaces are elegant and timeless, this pattern leads us to pause and ask: what role does color play in our lives today and are we becoming afraid of it?

Why Neutral Color Palettes Dominate Multi-Family Interiors

Historically, color has served as a reflection of the outside world. Across architecture, painting, fashion, marketing, and design, color has always told a story. From the rich reds and golds of the Renaissance to the soft pastels of Rococo interiors, the disciplined neutrals of Neoclassicism, the earth tones of Art Nouveau and Mid-Century design, and the bold neon hues of Modernism, color has continuously evolved alongside culture, technology, and human values to redefined how space could express identity, emotion, and aspiration.

Today, design is entering a more intentional and introspective phase. Contemporary interiors are increasingly informed by neuro-health sciences, environmental psychology, technology, and cultural studies, fields that explore how our surroundings influence mood, behavior, sense of belonging, and overall well-being. Color is no longer merely aesthetic perhaps it never truly was.

Our CEO expressed: “the trends are moving away from the cooler color schemes and embracing more of the warm earth tones again.”

We are now seeing a renewed interest in richer, earth based palettes, along with light blues, burgundy colors, that feel familiar, grounding, and inherently human. As digital saturation, information overload, and global uncertainty continue to define daily life, interior spaces are increasingly expected to function as environments of emotional regulation: places that foster calm, inclusiveness, and psychological comfort. Thoughtful use of color helps create interiors that feel welcoming, layered, and deeply personal much like nature itself. At the same time, we seek to capture a sense of optimism and joy for the future ahead.

At ALine, we see color as a powerful tool for connection and to express ourselves, no need to be afraid of it, we’ll be able to incorporate it to your space in a way it evolves with you and responds to how people experience the world.
