Lighting plays a big role in Interior Design especially in shared spaces such as Lobbies and Hallways. It is important to note that in lighting spaces, strategic placement and proper lighting choices are required. To achieve a comfortable and desirable space to be in, lighting needs to be well balanced.
Lighting has several variables to consider such as light temperature, light intensity, surface area, light emission and control or maintenance. Recently, New York state has been very strong on implementing the Local Law 88 of 2009 (LL88) that requires buildings to install energy efficient lighting systems and sub-metering to achieve energy savings. This includes the use of dimmable lights, LED fixtures and motion sensors.

Lighting Temperature: Warm Vs Cool
These two (2) hallways we’ve designed illustrate how light temperatures impact a space. Choosing the right temperature alongside the right finishes is very effective in bringing beauty in interior color schemes.
The image on the right showcases a sophisticated neutral palette, layered with different shades of beige. The warm lighting temperature softens the space, creating a timeless and understated atmosphere. The overall effect is a smart and polished interior—much like the quiet elegance of a handsome man in a perfectly tailored gray suit.
The image on the right blends beiges and blues, with cool white lighting that enhances the blue tones while harmonizing with the neutral beiges. Together, they create a relaxed and refreshing ambience—much like a beach resort.

Lighting Temperature and Mood
The lighting you choose for a space creates an ambiance and influences mood. Choosing warm soft lighting can make you feel more relaxed and cozy while choosing cool bright lighting can foster attentiveness and productivity.

Layering Light to Create Ambiance
A balanced combination of different types of light is key in achieving well-lit and comfortable spaces. Lighting highlights any architectural or interior detail that you decide to emphasize on like art, sculpture, ceiling detail, archways, finishes or furniture. Lighting also creates the illusion of space thus well-lit spaces create width, height and depth to an area.
One of our projects was a large lobby in Florida and the scale definitely gave us the opportunity to play with finishes, furniture and most importantly lighting. The combination of sconces to wash the columns finishes, a chandelier to fill in the expansive height of the space, cove lighting to wash the 2-storey columns and general LED lighting to ensure that the expanse of the lobby did not have dark spots and shadows.
It takes experts to handle lighting in Interiors and walking into a visually pleasing and comfortably lit lobby or hallway can invite more tenants and buyers giving added value to your property. Let’s chat and talk value!
